I pulled the safety glasses down over my eyes and glanced around to make sure that nobody was paying special attention to me before I pulled out the few small phials from my jacket pocket and placed them on the lab table. We were supposed to be following an express set of instructions, but they were so limiting. Glancing around one more time, I poured the contents of the first phial into a beaker with the vinegar already set in there. (Vinegar and baking soda reactions. How completely and utterly elementary.) The liquid caused the vinegar to emit a more pleasant odor, and turn a light purple, so light that most people wouldn't be able to notice it. Not that I'm most people.
Things were going according to plan so far. My reaction would be the most magnificent if it continued to follow the plans, but not so magnificent that everyone would notice my disregard of the mundane instruction set. I uncapped the second phial, full of a shimmering silver powder, and swirled it into the baking soda before pouring it into the vinegar solution, along with one more phial, full of rainbow-colored glitter, just for good measure. I stepped back about a foot and waited for the reaction to begin.
At first it just gave off about three tiny bubbles and then stopped completely. I sighed. The reaction was supposed to actually do something. Just as I was about to start over and do things the normal way(ugh, normal) I noticed foam beginning to rise to the top of the beaker. There we go, that was more like it! My excitement soon turned to worry as it began to spill off more foam than expected, shimmering in the harsh light of the classroom. At this point, a few had stopped to stare at my amazing experiment and I waved at them awkwardly, but the foam kept expanding. It was going to spill over on the lab table if I didn't do something quickly.
I grabbed a cap and shoved it down on the top of the beaker. Sure, the pressure was going to build up, but hey, it was a good temporary solutio--
BANG!
The noise was huge, and even huge-er was the mess of foam that had puffed all over the room. Now everyone was staring at me, including Ms. Bryens. I frowned. "Uh.. sorry. I have no idea what happened, I was just, um, following the instructions like I was supposed to!" Ms. Briens rolled her eyes and handed me a slip of paper which she had already scribbled her chicken-scratch signature onto.
"High-tail it to the detention room. Now, Ms. Kane."
I grimaced and accepted the slip silently. It wasn't exactly the first time I had messed with a class experiment unsuccessfully. In fact, it was my third time, and third strike. I sighed and walked away from the classroom, flicking a bit of foam out from my choppy hair.
The first thing I noticed in detention was my older twin sisters, Alistair(I call her Alis) and Kris, sitting close to each other, but with one seat between them. They were sending icy, dagger-like glares back and forth between themselves. I handed my paper slip to the current dungeon-keeper and plopped down in the seat between my sisters.
"So. Uhm, hi, guys... Why're you here?"
